Introducing Organizations
In our last post we shared our new focus on enterprise. Today we’re excited to show the first step in that direction: Organizations.
We started simple with individual accounts, then moved to teams, and now to organizations. This new structure is designed for companies that need to manage documents at scale. It gives you a central place to handle users and permissions, greater visibility across documents, and the flexibility to grow as your company grows.
As more of our customers have become larger organizations, the platform needed to evolve. Organizations make Documenso ready for that next stage.
The Problem: Scaling Without Structure
Before organizations, there was no good way to structure bigger teams. We saw people purchase multiple individual accounts in the early days, and it stopped when we started to offer teams. The same started to happen for bigger teams, which we are now addressing. An organization consists of members, who can be part of one or multiple teams in the organization.
Before, administrators and settings had to be duplicated manually and more importantly redundantly over multiple teams. It was messy and there was no way to oversee the whole organization either. Billing was also not ideal, since combining multiple teams into a smooth offer and billing flow required some manual overhead on both sides. It made it harder to offer bespoke setups, which is what Documenso is all about. All this resulted in drag on scaling and adoption.
The Solution: One Place for Teams, Users and Billing
To solve this, we restructured the product around the concept of an organization. This organization can be any size, but of course the concept is tailored to mainly enable bigger organizations without headaches. This restructuring comes with a few nice features that now make life easier for everyone:
Users belong to an organization first and can join and leave teams as needed. This helps with permission and user lifecycle management
An organization can house as many teams as needed. Creating a team is just as easy as sending a document, allowing you to scale smoothly
Organization-level settings allow setting global defaults and will evolve as we learn more about what customers need
We have a new "One organization = one bill policy". This means, you get one combined invoice for everything your organization uses, be it standard plans or bespoke custom setups (e.g. extra teams, additional compliance, etc.).
The new structure also allows us to offer more organization-wide features like custom email domains, organization-wide permissions groups and consistent organization-wide branding. Teams inherit those but can override as well. This way teams are configured by default, but flexible where needed.
Why This Matters
Shifting the platform to this model removes adoption friction and scales cleanly from 10 to 10,000 people. While these features aim at enterprise-focused plans, a lot of the improvements trickle down in what we call enterprise-grade infrastructure for everyone. Instead of trying to push a small team-focused product in the enterprise segment, we are building a top-of-the-line enterprise-platform and opening it up to everyone. We do this by offering plans for any scale.
What’s Coming Next?
